The goal of our group is to understand the dynamics of nutrients (including N, P, Si and Fe) and their induced biological production in the western North Pacific. We plan to perform keen international collaborations from ocean observations to the data analyses. Our target areas include the southern Sea of Okhotsk and the western Bering Sea, and are potential “Hot Spots” where strong mixing generates a remarkable increase in nutrient availability in surface waters. For establishing accurate 3D nutrient dynamic images, we are going to investigate the nutrient horizontal transport processes from these “Hot Spots” to the western North Pacific by using chemical tracers. Physical and biogeochemical processes controlling the 3D nutrient dynamic will be quantitatively analyzed with the estimates of primary production obtained from satellite ocean color remote sensing. This will allow us to well understand the processes that sustain biological production in the western North Pacific.
